AI in Education

A case study on the benefits, risks, and ethics of AI in the classroom.

AI in education

Overview

In the context of education, there are many different applications that AI is used for. These include generating personalised learning for different students, automated grading of tests and assesments, and helping the teachers themselves with managing workload and other tasks.

Benefits

Personalised Learning

The use of AI in creating lesson plans could help personalis every students learning according to their pace and interests

Instant Feedback

Students can recieve feedback instantly regarding their work, helping them know what to improve without needing to contantly go to a teacher for help

Automated Grading

AI can grade tests and assesments automatically, saving time for the teachers.

Managing Workload

AI can help the teachers manage their workload by automating tasks such as grading and creating reports.

Disadvantages

Over Reliance

The over reliance of AI could cause students to not develop their critical thinking, and lead to a global decreace in human inteligence

Privacy Concerns

The increace in AI use could cause AI to pick up on personal traits and information of students, potentially leading to cases of identity theft in the future.

Human connection

AI cannot fully replace the interactivity and personal connection to students, and this could lead to disinterest in the subject and an overall decrease in learning.

Plagarism and Cheating

The use of generative AI tools for doing student work could lead to increased academic dishonesty, and students could cheat out of doing their work, leading to them not learning and understanding the material that they should know.

Ethical Issues

AI in education raises a lot of ethical issues worth considering Students can use it to cheat on assignments, meaning they're not actually learning, and it's unfair because not everyone can afford these tools, giving wealthier students an advantage. These systems also collect a lot of personal data on students, which is concerning, and they can be biased against certain groups without anyone realising it. If students rely on AI too much, they might stop developing their own thinking skills, which kind of defeats the purpose of school. Overall, AI has its uses in education, but there are serious ethical questions that need to be addressed before it's used everywhere.

Christian Perspective

Regarding the use of AI, many christians would have different viewpoints. Some may argue that using it is considered dishonesty and cheating, because you are not doing the work that you should be doing. Others may say that as long as you are being responsable and doing most of the work yourself, you can use it to give you a slight boost in whatever you are doing.

Non-Christian Perspective

In the secular world, some people view AI as a scary machine that will take over the world. Most people on the other hand don't really have any issues regarding its use, as long as it is used in a responsable and ethical way, not causeing any harm, and improving productivity and the society as a whole.
